The practice has been in existence since the establishment of the NHS in 1948 and has been located in several sites and moved to its present location in 1994. Public Transport Nearest tube station: Elephant and Castle Bus Routes: 21, 42, 53, 63, 168, 172, 363, 453 Parking Patients can use free parking for up to two hours in the Tesco car park alternatively for one hour and a half in the Lidl car park. Paid metered parking can also be found in the surrounding streets i.e. East Street, Marcia Road, and Congreve Street. Access Ground floor consultation rooms have no internal restrictions to the movement of patients in wheelchairs which includes disabled WC. There are additionally consultation rooms on the first floor. Services The practice takes pride in offering the highest standard of patient-centred healthcare. We run many clinics for chronic disease care and offer a wide variety of other medical services such as antenatal and postnatal care, childhood vaccinations, travel vaccinations, smoking cessation clinics, sexual health and well-person check-ups. IMPORTANT NEWS: All patients have received a letter asking them to complete a confirmation of address form. Our appointment system is aimed to improve patient access and is designed to provide: 48 hours access to see a GP 24 hours access to see a Nurse Same day emergency appointments to see a Doctor Late evening access By adhering to the above mentioned guidelines we have divided our GP’s session into four segments which are as follows: Pre-bookable appointments: These are the appointments which can be booked from 1 – 24 weeks in advance. 48 hours booking: These are the appointment slots which are open for booking only two days in advance. i.e. Monday’s 48hours appointment slots will be released on Thursday for booking. This will enable patients, who are keen to see a doctor within next two working days, to book an appointment. Same day & emergency appointment: These are the appointments which are released on the same day. Patients, who consider their condition as emergency and needs urgent attention, can book this appointment by calling us on the same day. Extended evening session: We offer extended evening surgery, every Monday and Thursday from 6:30pm to 7:30pm by appointment only. These appointments will be especially useful for full-time workers who find it difficult to get to the surgery during the working hours. Nurse Appointments: We have divided our nurse’s session in two segments: Pre-bookable nurse appointments: These are the appointment slots which are available for booking from 1 to 24 weeks in advance. 24 hours appointments: These are the appointment slots which are available for booking one day in advance. Home Visits If possible please try to telephone reception before 10am if you require a home visit. A doctor or nurse may phone you back as it may be that your problem can be dealt with by telephone advice, or that it would be more appropriate to send a nurse, or indeed arrange a hospital attendance. House visits are only available for patients who are housebound because of illness or disability. Please remember that several patients can be seen in the practice in the time that it takes to make one home visit. There are also better facilities for examining and treating patients at the Health Centre. Test Results Please call between 11am and 3.30pm to enquire about your test results as our reception staff will have more time to deal with your request between these times. Note that the practice has a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection and we will only release test results to the person to whom they relate unless that person has given prior permission for the release of this data or they are not capable of understanding the results. When you take your test you will be told how long it will be before the results are returned to the practice. It is your responsibility to check your results and to make an appointment to discuss them with your doctor if your are advised to do so. Repeat Prescriptions Repeat prescriptions can be obtained in person, by mail (please include stamped addressed envelope) or by following the link on this page to the online form. REQUESTS CAN NOT BE TAKEN BY PHONE. If you take regular medication please ensure that you allow at least 48 hours, equivalent to 2 working days, for your prescription to be processed. Please allow 48 hours, excluding weekends and Bank Holidays, for your request to be processed. Any problems please telephone the surgery. Clinics & Services Clinics At the Old Kent Road Surgery we provide the following medical services Antenatal Clinic If you think you are pregnant come and see one of our GPs / Nurses and bring a sample of urine (the first that you pass in the morning). Once your pregnancy is confirmed then you will be referred to community midwife. We operate a shared system of antenatal care, i.e. antenatal care is shared between two or three of the following: Your GP Your Midwife: High Risk Clinics: The Old Kent Road Surgery provides antenatal services for people with added risk during pregnancy. We have a Specialist Obstetric Team from St Thomas' Hospital who provide an antenatal service in the Surgery once per week on a Monday morning. Adult Vaccination Why might some adults need vaccines? Some adults incorrectly assume that the vaccines they received as children will protect them for the rest of their lives. Generally this is true, except that: Some adults were never vaccinated as children Newer vaccines were not available when some adults were children Immunity can begin to fade over time As we age, we become more susceptible to serious disease caused by common infections (e.g., flu, pneumococcus) We run adult vaccination clinic by appointment only so please book an appointment with one of our nurses. Asthma Clinic A nurse will assess your level of asthma symptoms, give you information about asthma and ensure you are taking your medication correctly. If you are having problems the nurse will refer you to your GP. We will send you an appointment every 3, 6 or 12 months depending on the severity of your condition. If you would like to attend this clinic, please book an appointment with one of our nurses. Baby Clinic All children are invited to see the doctor for a health and development check at about 6 weeks. Later checks are carried out by the Health Visitors and School Nurses. Please bring your "red" book when you come. Routine childhood vaccinations can be done at this clinic - or if you prefer a different time please make an appointment with one of our nurses. Benefits & Welfare Rights We offer advise on Benefits & Welfare rights to our patients. A qualified benefits advisor attends the practice once a week, on Wednesdays. To see her you will need to make an appointment at the reception. For housing issues, please contact your local council or housing association. Cervical Screening Programme We offer cervical screening, which involves a simple examination to check the health of a woman’s cervix. If abnormal cells are found, in many cases they will go back to normal on their own, but sometimes they continue to develop. If left untreated, these cells may eventually develop into cancer. Cervical cancer can easily be prevented if abnormal changes are found and treated early. The Department of Health recommends that women between the ages of 20 and 64 have routine cervical smears every three to five years as part of the NHS Screening Programme. Statistics show that a woman’s risk of cervical cancer is cut by 84% if she has a smear test every five years, and 91% if she has a smear every three years. Please book an appointment with one of our nurses for your smear test. Contraception The doctors and nurses are very happy to offer you advice on contraception in complete confidence. We don't hold a special clinic for contraception, just make an appointment, with one of our nurses or doctors, during surgery time. Counselling / Psychology Clinic We offer an in-house couselling service.The counselling is facilitated by a qualified psychologist who runs psychology clinic twice a week, Tuesday and Wednesday by appointment only. If you would like to see her, please see one of our GPs who will assess your condition and if necessary will refer you to the psychologist. Diabetic Clinic We offer a comprehensive diabetes screening service including screening for retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy (eyes, nerves and kidneys). We also offer cardiac and lipid screening for people with diabetes, and refer to the dietician. We offer advice on insulin therapy and oral medication. Measurement of glycosylated haemoglobin (Hba1c), triglycerides and proteinuria is a routine part of our screening. We run the Diabetic Clinic by appointment, please call at the reception to book an appointment with our diabetes specialist nurse. Health Visitor Tuesday - no appointment necessary Smoking Cessation Clinic : STOP SMOKING START LIVING We provide a special clinic to help people who want to give up smoking. The clinic will offer a personalised plan, nicotine replacement therapy and ongoing support after a person has given up. The clinic is run by our Specialist Nurse & a trained Health Care Assistant. Sexual Health & Family Planning Clinic In our Sexual Health clinics we offer tests for sexual and urinary health problems, such as: sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as syphilis,gonorrhoea, genital warts, and chlamydia HIV or AIDs,cystitis (bladder infection) Other infections of the genitals, such as thrush. We also offer Family Planning & Contraception advise, including Emergency Contraception and FREE Condoms! Please book an appointment with one of our Nurses or GPs. Non-NHS Services Non-NHS Medical Examination Our senior GP, Dr Abu-Nijaila, conducts medical examinations for insurance companies and other fitness medicals by appointment only. These include HGV licence's, taxi cab, elderly drivers and pre-employment medicals. There is a charge payable by the patient for these medicals. Please ask the receptionist for details. Registration New Patient Registration Patients are asked to come into the surgery and complete a registration form. Please bring ID & proof of address with you. Our premises have disabled access. Your Information Your Personal Information Your personal details are kept confidential in line with the 1998 Data Protection Act. Information is shared for general health screening and surveillance, for example smears and general health checks. The practice complies with Data Protection and Access to Medical Records legislation. Identifiable information about you will be shared with others in the following circumstances: To provide further medical treatment for you e.g. from district nurses and hospital services. To help you get other services e.g. from the social work department. This requires your consent. When we have a duty to others e.g. in child protection cases anonymised patient information will also be used at local and national level to help the Health Board and Government plan services e.g. for diabetic care. If you do not wish anonymous information about you to be used in such a way, please let us know. Reception and administration staff require access to your medical records in order to do their jobs. These members of staff are bound by the same rules of confidentiality as the medical staff. Concerns & Complaints Concerns and Complaints We aim to provide a high quality general medical service. If for any reason you are not happy with the service provided, please raise it with a member of staff or pick up a concern or complaints form from reception. This will be passed to the Practice Manager for her response. If you don’t feel comfortable with raising your concern with us, you can alternatively contact Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 58 77170.
